Tra Vinh Province People’s Committee has asked local authorities to speed up the province’s agricultural restructuring programme by replacing ineffective rice paddy fields with other crops.
Accelerating agricultural restructuring towards large-scale and high-tech production became critical for the sector involving 70 per cent of the country’s population but contributing just below 20 per cent of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP).
Authorities of the central province of Thua Thien-Hue is directing their resources on implementing 12 priority projects worth nearly VND1.2 trillion (US$52 million) to accelerate the agricultural restructuring process by 2020.
The success of agricultural restructuring, including the establishment
of new rural areas, depends on greater co-operation and risk sharing
between different stakeholders, experts say.
Three mega programmes covering agricultural restructuring, fisheries and
forestry development and disaster prevention have been allocated VND640
trillion (US$29 billion) in a five-year investment boost approved by
the cabinet yesterday.
